Springtime

by María Irene Fornés

“I wanted to love with all my heart or not at all and that I wanted to be loved the same way or not at all”

Springtime by María Irene Fornés dissects the parameters of love when faced with socioeconomic disparity.

Set in 1958, Greta is diagnosed with Tuberculosis. In a fight to pay for her treatment, Rainbow resorts to petty crime until caught and threatened. Greta and Rainbow's love is put to the test under the pressures of lack of medical care and nourishment, poverty, homophobia, and sexism.

Performed and broadcasted during COVID-19, we had to push the boundaries of love while respecting social distancing. Our production explored the love between Greta and Rainbow in the form of memory from a surrealist lens. The play took place in Greta’s mind and functioned as a ghost play.
